Roope One Name Study

Discovering our Roope, Rope, Rooper, Roop, Roupe Ancestors

Frances, Charles & Dorothy Roope c.1893

The three younger children of Charles Henry & Milicent Matilda Roope. Great grandparents of Evelyn O'Connor

Welcome!

Welcome to our ROOPE One Name Study. This includes the variants: ROPE, ROOPER, ROOP, ROUPE.

Roope was my paternal grandmother’s maiden name. My mother began the first stages of the research in the 1960’s. It is through her that I first became interested. Career and family intervened, before I finally took up the baton in the late 1990’s.

The first file to be uploaded will be that concerned with the ‘Dartmouth Roopes’ which currently dates back to the late 16th Century. I can date the name back further but have yet to make the connections. In this file you will find many other names (when this tree was compiled I was not doing a One Name Study). I owe a debt of gratitude to my cousin Hilary Richardson for supplying much of the material on the Brooking family and it is with her kind permission that I include this. Subsequent files will feature the Roope & Rope families in Norfolk and Suffolk on which I have recently been working.

This Study is very much work in progress (is it ever finished!) and although currently UK based I hope, with your help, to extend it worldwide. Please note, that for the present, any place name without mention of a country is England & you will find that I use Chapman’s British County Code.

I have made a real effort to ensure that copyright has not been infringed so if you come across an issue please let me know. Inevitably, errors will occur so if you find that I have omitted someone or have any extra information to add I would love to hear from you. You are very welcome to material form this site but PLEASE do what I try to do and acknowledge your sources. It has taken many years of painstaking research.
